An interactive, step-by-step walkthrough that introduces every Board Studio feature — right inside the app.
Overview
Board Studio includes a built-in Guided Tour that walks new users through the app’s key features using spotlight highlights and contextual tooltips. No documentation reading required — you learn by doing.
How to Start the Tour
Click the Tour button (target/bullseye icon 🎯) in the header bar at the top of the Board Studio interface.
Tip: You can restart the tour at any time by clicking the Tour button again. It always starts from the beginning.
What the Tour Covers
Board Studio’s guided tour is split into two sequential tours that together cover the full onboarding flow:
Intro Tour (2 steps)
The intro tour focuses on initial data source setup:
| Step | Feature | What You Learn |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Data Source Type | How to select the type of data source (board, filter, or JQL) |
| 2 | Data Source Selection | How to choose a specific board, filter, or query |
Feature Tour (5 steps)
The feature tour covers core Board Studio capabilities:
| Step | Feature | What You Learn |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Overview | Summary statistics and data source context |
| 2 | General Settings | Global configuration options for the board |
| 3 | Board Structure | How to assign fields to horizontal and vertical swimlanes |
| 4 | Links Section | How to configure link styling and visibility |
| 5 | Update Button | How to refresh the board with the latest Jira data |
Spotlight Highlights
Each tour step uses a spotlight overlay to draw your attention to the relevant UI element:
- The target element is brightly illuminated.
- The rest of the interface is dimmed with a semi-transparent overlay.
- A tooltip appears next to the highlighted element with a clear description and a “Next” button.
Auto-Launch for New Users
Board Studio automatically launches the tours for first-time users in two phases:
- Intro tour — Launches automatically on first visit when the data source DOM targets are present, guiding the user through initial setup.
- Feature tour — Launches automatically after the first successful data load and after the intro tour has been completed or skipped. A 5-second grace period after app start ensures the UI is fully rendered before the feature tour begins.
| Scenario | Tour Behavior |
|---|---|
| First visit (no data loaded) | Intro tour auto-launches when DOM targets exist |
| First data load complete | Feature tour auto-launches (after intro tour is done and a 5-second grace period) |
| Returning user | Neither tour auto-launches; click the Tour button to restart manually |
| After restart | Tour button always available in the header bar |
Note: Each auto-launch only happens once. After the initial experience, both tours are always accessible via the Tour button but never interrupt your workflow automatically.
Restart Anytime
The tour is never a one-time experience. Whenever you want a refresher — or when onboarding a colleague by sharing your screen — click the Tour button to restart the full walkthrough from Step 1.
Why It Matters
| Without Guided Tour | With Guided Tour |
|---|---|
| Users read documentation before getting started | Users learn interactively inside the app |
| New users feel lost on first visit | New users are guided step by step |
| Feature discovery depends on exploration | Key features are surfaced proactively |
| Onboarding takes time | Users are productive in minutes |
Tip: When onboarding a team, ask each member to run through the guided tour on their first visit. It takes just a few minutes and covers everything they need to start using Board Studio effectively.
