Vertical swimlanes create vertical divisions on your board, organising cards into columns based on a Jira field’s values.
About vertical swimlanes
Vertical swimlanes divide the board into vertical columns. Cards are distributed across columns based on field values.
Add a vertical swimlane
- In the sidebar, expand Board Structure
- Expand Vertical swimlanes
- Select Add dimension
- Choose a Jira field (for example, Sprint, Team, Epic Link)
Cards are immediately organised into columns based on the field values.
Configuration options

| Sort direction | Ascending (first value at left) or Descending (first value at right) |
| Start position | Left or Right — where the sequence begins |

Empty values
Cards without a value for the swimlane field are grouped under a column labelled Not defined.
